Post-Winter Checklist: Make Sure Your Home is Ready for Spring

Even if you are an avid winter sports advocate, if you live in CNY, you’re likely getting excited for spring now that February has finally arrived. The thought of sunshine and flowers blooming on the trees surely brings a smile to your face…until you think of all the chores you have to do to get your house ready for the spring season. Fortunately, we’ve compiled a checklist of the things you should do to prepare for the brighter days ahead in one convenient place.

Clear Your Gutters

The gutters are an often-neglected portion of the house during spring cleaning season, but this step in preparing your home for spring is extremely important to maintain your home over time. Start by cleaning out the debris by hand while wearing gloves. Once most of what you can grab is cleared out, rinse the rest with a hose.  By clearing your gutters regularly, you can prevent your home from both water damage and foundational issues. Still need convincing? Cleaning out your gutters can prevent mosquito nests!

Filter Through

This time of year is an ideal time to check your HVAC filters, which should be changed out once or twice a year to keep your system heating and cooling your home efficiently. In addition, stove hood filters, refrigerator filters, and dishwasher filters all require regular replacement. What better time to tackle these nagging tasks than during spring cleaning?

Deck it Out

If you’re like most CNY residents, you may like to spend the few short months of nice weather we have enjoying the outdoors. Living spaces like decks and porches can endure a lot of stress in the winter months. With frequent expanding and contracting from freezing and thawing, your deck might have acquired damage over the winter.  It’s important to check for loose boards, and railings and have them repaired before you start putting tables, chairs and other furniture out and enjoying your outdoor space again.

Stop, Drop, & Roll

While slowly working through spring cleaning it’s important to prevent any future fires from occurring with the temperature change. Check your fire detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are in working order. Dryers can be a major cause of house fires if not properly maintained. Use spring cleaning as an opportunity to clean out the dryer duct. You can hire a professional to ensure proper cleaning or buy an at home kit with instructions and tools to clean the vent yourself. Not only can it reduce the risk of fires, but it can also improve the performance of the dryer.

Exterior Maintenance

The exterior of your home takes the brunt of the winter weather. With spring approaching, it’s a good opportunity to survey your house to see if there were any shingles, roof tiles, or windows damaged during the season. Have any broken or damaged materials replaced or repaired. With regular repair and maintenance, you can extend the lifespan of your home’s materials, and improve your home’s curbside appeal!
