How COVID-19 is Influencing Home Remodeling Trends: Part 3

As we arrive at the year mark of this pandemic, we look ahead to a new normal. We have all undoubtedly become more aware of our cleanliness habits... so let’s explore how to integrate choices that are functional, stylish, and easy to clean and maintain into your next home remodeling project.

Naturally, one of the biggest priorities for any home is health and safety, and the pandemic has only exacerbated that need. Choosing finishes and surfaces for your home can go beyond just style. When making selections for your home, you can prioritize materials that are antimicrobial, easy to clean, and durable.

Ceramic, Porcelain, or Luxury Vinyl Tile

Consider using ceramic, porcelain, or luxury vinyl tile in spaces like the kitchen and bathroom, which are both wet zones and high-traffic areas. Ceramic, porcelain, and luxury vinyl tile are highly resistant to scratching and staining, they are nonporous and water resistant, they don’t require special cleaners, and they can handle almost any type of sanitizing agents.

Quartz

Quartz is another incredibly popular option because of its durability. Quartz countertops are stain and scratch-resistant, extremely durable, and easy to clean. And with such a vast selection of design options, you’re sure to find a design that fits seamlessly into any space of your home. Quartz is an obviously popular choice for kitchen countertops, islands, and bathroom vanities, but it can also be used for shower walls, backsplashes, and more.

Copper & Bronze

Materials like copper and bronze have natural antimicrobial properties and add a stylistic touch to any space. They are great options for commonly touched surfaces like faucets, door knobs, pull handles, and even railings. Copper and bronze sinks are becoming increasingly popular in kitchens and bathrooms as well. Touch-free technology is also helping curb the spread of germs. Hands-free sinks and toilets, smart thermostats, and automated lights help homeowners limit the spread of germs on commonly touched surfaces.

Air Quality

Improving the air quality in your space is also important in eliminating pollutants. The easiest way to do this is though aeration. Opening the doors and windows of your home to allow for fresh air to circulate significantly improves air quality. If you’re in need of more airflow in your home, consider factoring in additional windows for your space when undergoing your next project. Installing ventilation, particularly in the kitchen, is another way to improve air quality. Turning on a vent when cooking helps eliminate significant pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide that come from gas stoves.

As we move forward, continuing to adapt to the changes this season has brought to our lives, we should embrace all the lessons learned along the way. As you begin to think about your next home remodeling project, consider incorporating these elements into your home to build a healthier space for you and your family.
