McClurg is Going to Summer Camp!

McClurg is back for another Summer of Fun with the Onondaga County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Group!

This year, we’re excited to extend our camp program to six weeks. One day each week, for six weeks, our McClurg team members will be visiting some of Onondaga County’s beautiful parks—including Pratt’s Falls, Highland Forest, Oneida Shores, Long Branch, and Upper Onondaga.

We’re thrilled to work with campers again this year. Our mission: to teach teamwork, life skills, and the joy of working with your hands.

Promoting trades education and the satisfaction of creating something tangible has long been a passion project for the team at McClurg Remodeling.

Last summer, we teamed up with Scott Hudson and the 4-H crew after witnessing the incredible work they were doing with local kids and hands on educational programing—and our collaboration has only grown stronger since then.

This year, we’ve enhanced our curriculum to include more knot-tying and shelter-building, much like last year, but with a new “imagination element.” Campers will get to work with various sizes of tarps, ropes, and poles, sparking creativity and problem-solving.

Here’s how our lesson goes:

• A mini knot-tying session, covering two half hitches and the taut-line hitch
• A walk-around tour of an example tent or shelter we set up in advance
• Team-building discussion about leadership and working together
• Teams receive materials and collaborate to build their own shelters based on the model we provide
• During the build, we emphasize safety, teamwork, listening skills, and helping one another

Campers have been incredibly enthusiastic once their shelters are complete! One of the most rewarding parts for us is hearing how some kids keep their shelters standing overnight, returning the next day eager to make adjustments or reinforce structures that may have been affected by wind or weather.

It’s a proud moment to see that spark of confidence ignite when campers create something with their own hands and as a team. It gives us hope that tomorrow’s builders will be great team-builders!

The creativity really takes off after campers master their basic shelter. That’s when we bring out the McClurg Building Corner, different sized tarps, ropes, and poles of all shapes and sizes, and encourage campers to let their imaginations run wild.

We’re so grateful to the 4-H Crew for inviting us back for more summer camp adventures. We look forward to continuing—and growing—this collaboration, adding even more fun, learning, and creativity each year!
