Your Ultimate Home Maintenance Checklist

Keeping up with home maintenance can seem overwhelming, but taking care of small tasks throughout the year can help save you time and money down the road. We know regular home maintenance tasks are not always top of mind, so we broke down a timeline of to-dos for you to ensure your home is running safely and efficiently:

Weekly:

Monitor moisture levels- Keeping moisture levels balanced in your home is essential not only for breathability reasons but to limit the number of microorganisms like mold and bacteria that could thrive in high humidity. Invest in a hygrometer to keep an eye on moisture in your home.

Look for signs of leaks- Check under sinks and on your ceilings for signs of water seeping into where it shouldn't be. The quicker you spot a leak, the less damage it can cause to your home.

Every 30 days:

Test your alarms- It's important to make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working correctly, and that batteries are changed when necessary to ensure your home is safe.

Check your water heater- Immediately catching a problem is always a good thing. Be on the lookout for leaks, drips, damp carpet spots, or a musty smell where your heater is located. Take a listen to how it sounds when it's running as well, any loud ticks or bangs are usually a sign that something may be wrong.

Clean your exhaust hood- This should be done even more often if you tend to cook regularly with a lot of oils. Cleaning will prevent the vent from clogging and the fan from overheating, which could avoid a potential fire hazard.

Every 30 to 90 days:

Change your filters- Regularly changing your air filter and furnace filters will ensure your HVAC system is running as efficiently as possible. Not only will this improve your in-home air quality, but it will also reduce the cost of your energy bills and extend the life of your furnace and air conditioning unit.

Every three months:

Test GFCI outlets- This is a quick test done just by pressing the test buttons on your outlets, but it ensures they are running correctly to protect you from potential electrical shock.

Check your gutters- Properly working gutters minimize water intrusion in your home and direct water away from your foundation. Check your gutters regularly for damage or clogged sections to ensure that if there is a problem, it gets addressed as quickly as possible.

Every two years:

Plumbing- Having your plumbing checked by a professional will ensure you don't have any hidden leaks or issues that can affect your water flow. Knowing that everything is running well will give you peace of mind. If things are not running well, it will provide you with the information you need to address an issue that can save you on your water bill and prevent more costly damage later on.

When needed:

Swap out older windows- Replacing older, drafty, damaged, or warped windows will reduce your heating and cooling bills. Keep an eye out for any damage as the seasons change, and if you don't already have energy-efficient windows in place, they could be an excellent investment for your home.

And don’t forget about your screens! Check the seams and look for any tears to prevent unwanted insects from making their way inside your home in the warmer months.

Spruce up your exterior- Painting your front door and garage door can make all the difference if your home's exterior needs a little refresh, and it will give your house instant curb appeal. Don't want to paint? Having your siding cleaned as needed will keep your house looking fresh and welcoming.
